Those Russian Girls
Russian girls make the rest of the world jealous, with their gorgeous beauty, often including long blonde hair, and tall build. They are also very fashion conscious, knowing what the best looks are, the fanciest clothes to be seen in, and the right makeup to compliment the look, from eyeliner and mascara to the most flattering lipsticks and blush. Look good, feel good right? Well then these women must be feeling fabulous!
Head out in the winter, and you’ll expect to see people in furs, winter boots, thermal vests and tons of layers. That’s what would happen in New York when the temperature drops anyway! But not in Russia, apparently! Look at these women, in their short skirts and heels, walking around the icy ground as if they’re on their way to a beach club or some kind of mid-summer picnic! Hard to believe that temperatures can go to -20, but hopefully not today!
Have you heard of the World’s Strongest Man competition? Well this is probably a contender for the World’s Strongest Woman, as we can’t believe that she can possibly have the strength to lift this vehicle up with her arms along. She looks like she’s dragging the car all on her own, and although it doesn’t look like the depths of winter, it must be pretty cold nonetheless! If I were her I’d be getting annoyed at the photographer for not helping!
Running can be tough, even if you have the right footwear. But it looks like here is another example of Russian women who won’t be seen without their designer shoes! They would rather run in stilettos than trade them in for a nice comfy pair of Adidas trainers. The truth is, that they are taking part in a famous stiletto race, which takes part around the country. The winners get thousands of dollars of shopping coupons!
The Fountain Jump
If you know your Russian culture, you know that there is a fun and crazy tradition that high school graduates like to try out, which sometimes college grads try too! It’s jumping into a fountain, to show how excited you are that your school days are over. Sounds like loads of fun, until you’re done splashing about and have to get home in soaking wet clothes in freezing weather of course, but we won’t think about that.
A fountain jump isn’t a substitute for a real party of course, and graduation parties in Russia can be just as wild as you see in the rest of the world. Freedom from studies, the world opening up in front of you without another exam in sight? Now that’s a reason to let loose! They are also saying goodbye to many of their friends, who might go abroad to study, or leave for military service now that their days in education are over.
Nothing to see here, just a woman taking a selfie in the meat section of the local supermarket or grocery store. She comes from a place called Yekaterinburg, (easy huh?) which is across the mountains from the well known capital of Moscow, and she clearly wants to prove to the world that Russia has plenty of delicious meat products to choose from! Either that, or she didn’t think to check where she was standing before she snapped her pic.
In the United States, you can choose whether you want to join the military, but in Russia that’s not the case. In fact, every single man and woman has to join the military for at least a year once they’re done with school. Obviously you need to be healthy and able, but if that’s the case- off you go to serve your country! The national pride is huge over there, and the national service and army duty definitely contributes to this.
While you’re looking at this beautiful female Russian pilot, why not use this opportunity to teach you guys something about female pilots in Russia! In World War Two, Stalin created three flying regiments which were female only, and actually put Russia on the map as the first country with women pilots! Women are so brilliant at it, that the 100 women flew 30,000 missions during the war, and they’ve never looked back.
Fearsome Ice Skills
As you can imagine, Winter sports are a hit in Russia, but the competitive streaks can get a little ruthless over there! Russian’s are often great athletes, and when they come up against other countries who are good at their games, they play to win! This is a photo of a goalie called Elizaveta Kondakova, who is a brilliant hockey player and is deep in concentration to make sure she takes her team to the winning top spot!
Did you ever have to wear a school uniform as a kid in school, or follow a dress code? You’re lucky if you didn’t, as in Russia, all the kids have to wear the same uniform, which has been around for decades. It helps to make sure that no one treats school like a fashion parade, and that the poorer kids don’t feel ashamed that they don’t have as many nice clothes. Smart idea, but can be tough to keep wearing the same thing day in and day out.
A Beautiful Smile
Russians aren’t necessarily the friendliest of people, and they do say that if you’re walking out and about and a strange Russian smiles at you, they’re probably under the influence of alcohol! Russians even have a motto, that you should look after a “smiling” stranger, because they have been drinking. Despite this, Russian’s have lovely smiles, and as you can see from this photo, when they decide to share their smiles, it lights up the room.
We Love Putin
A slightly weird one, but this girl is a member of Putin’s Army. While the word army might make you think of soldiers and warfare and guns and artillery, this is more of a fan club. It’s full of people who love their president, Vladimir Putin! While the rest of the world might be in two minds about him, this girl and her fellow members love their number one guy so much that they are willing to ruin perfectly good t shirts and clothes over him!
The most beautiful girl in the world, and that’s not just my own opinion, comes from Russia. Kristina Pimenova is a model, the daughter of a model and a football hero. She is famous for working with huge brands such as Armani, Benetton and Burberry, and she is also a gymnastics medal holder! She is just 12 years old, and already has a bright future ahead of her in modelling, sports, and acting, too, as she recently starred in her first movie!
Park Table Tennis
In the United States, parks might have jungle gyms, or basketball courts, while in the UK, it’s common to find a tennis court in your local park. In Russia, the trend is… ping pong tables! That’s right, table tennis is a totally common game that people like to play when they’re out and about relaxing during the too short summer months, so the parks are all set up for you to play with friends and family in the sunshine. Just don’t get too competitive!
This photo makes me laugh so much! Looks like old folk are the same no matter what country you are in, and none of them can quite handle the technology. In Russia, you call an old lady like this a babushka, and whether she’s your grandma, or a friendly woman in the local library, she’s going to need some help to find her emails! Don’t laugh too much, as we will probably be the same before too long has gone by!
Brr… I get cold just looking at this photo. This is Red Square, famous around the world as being a national treasure for Russia, with St Basil’s cathedral inside, as well as the Kremlin, which is what holds the Russian government. It used to be only for Russian’s, with no foreigners allowed in, but that’s not the case anymore. Here, covered in snow, it has a gorgeously magical side to it that makes tourists visit from all over the world.
What are we looking at right now? It appears to be a horse, but with a kid on it, and wearing… socks? So strange! Unlike places like Texas, where kids often ride horses to school, this child is actually taking part in a Christmas Festival, which is taking place in the city center of Nizhnevartovk, (we won’t make you say it, don’t worry.) This multicolored horse is part of the celebrations, and it looks like they’re going to have a ball!
Russian BBQ style
When it’s freezing for most of the calendar year, you need to stoke up the barbeque whenever you get the inclination, because BBQ season doesn’t really exist! This photo shows some Russians not just barbequing but camping, too, squatting down without chairs enjoying nature, despite it looking like truly icy temperatures! And there’s us, staying hidden indoors until bikini season. Puts us to shame, don’t you think?
If the name Sochi rings a bell, you might already have heard of the Black Sea resort town, which is a bit north of Abkhazia. While it used to be Georgia, it’s now Russia, and was even the site of the Winter Olympics, back in 2014. As you can see, it’s a popular tourist spot, as well as a haven for the locals, but it’s not exactly the place to go for a quiet or secluded beach day! In fact, head out there early, or you’ll have to stand!
If you spot a little home in the middle of the woods in Russia, this is known as a Dacha. It’s a common thing in Russia, and this guy is shown here heading back to visit his families dacha. Inside, he found a whole treasure trove of Soviet memorabilia, including this fetching hat, which likely belonged to a pilot from the Second World War. The whole country is like a museum waiting to be explored!
Wedding at Sea
There’s nowhere in the world where a wedding isn’t a special occasion, and many engaged couples look for ways to make it even more unique and interesting. This couple decided to get married at sea, as all captains of boats can officiate marriage ceremonies. This is the Neva River, in St Petersburg, and is a gorgeous spot for a couple to tie the knot. What amazing photos, and we hope the marriage is just as stunning!
Fond of Fur
The fur trade has come under a lot of scrutiny and scandal, for the cruelty it shows to animals. In fact, in some places, buying fur is illegal, and certainly highly regulated. But in Russia, fur hats and coats are very common, probably due to the seriously cold temperatures during the winter time. While in the States, a woman like this would be a throwback to the 80’s or 90’s, in Russia, this is just your average trip to the local store.
This is a great photo of a soviet milkmaid, working a hard manual labor job, carrying the milk from place to place, and working hard on her feet all day. Despite that, she is beautifully put together and smiling, showing that Russian women always always look their best, and don’t let something like hard work get in the way of that! Despite this being an old photo, the attitudes in Russia are still the same, you can bet on that!
Have you heard of Parkour before? It’s a sport which is very common, and consists of people running, jumping and moving through buildings in a city. There’s a lot of mobility involved, with some people able to jump as much as two or three stories of a building, landing on concrete and not even getting hurt. In Russia, a lot of kids and teens use this sport to get their energy out, as well as another slightly strange hobby of hanging from antenna!
Have you ever seen a Shaman before? This is a religious healer who lives on Lake Baikal which is in Siberia. Shamans are known for healing people, making medicines, and working hard to understand the link between the spiritual and the physical to help others. This Shaman is a Russian citizen, and he lives on the island of Olkhon, near the country of Mongolia, with his own clan. He looks like a serious chap, so I wonder how they asked for his photo?
Getting a Tan
There’s a fondness in this generation, for lying out in the sun and getting yourself gorgeously brown from the suns rays. Might sound stupid, but there we go. And even in Russia, when the sun makes an appearance, people are going to rush to get themselves as close to it as they can! This was taken at Patriachs Pond, which is a popular spot in all weather conditions, but on this rare warm day, it attracted a crowd.
The Magic Broomstick
This broomstick will be very familiar to you if you’ve spent any time in Russia, as it’s a great multitasking implement! Here you can see it being used as a windshield wiper, and it’s also used for cleaning, brushing, and in saunas too! They have been around for thousands of years, but this is probably the first time we’ve seen it being used for this particular choice! Maybe it was super snowy that day-smart!
When you live in a country which has so much history of poverty and hardship, you learn to get creative with the small amount of household items you have. Maybe a broom can brush snow off your car, and maybe a bucket can become a hat or an umbrella! If this is the case, we shouldn’t laugh at this poor old woman, but we just didn’t expect to see someone walking around with her head covered this way!
In the United States, there are a few brands which make sportswear who rival one another for the top spot. There is Nike, Adidas, Reebok and more. But in Russia, it seems like Adidas reigns supreme. Actors from Russia enjoying their downtime will often be seen in this uniform, Adidas pants and jacket, Adidas shoes, and even perhaps an Adidas hat! In this case, maybe matching the gear with a red woolly hat was a bit over the top.
Excuse me Officer?
Perhaps the police officers in Russia don’t have enough to do, but we’re still not sure they should be hanging out at the local parks taking up the swing set so that small children can’t play! Come on, officer. You must have something you could be doing. Patrolling the streets? Going door to door to solve crimes? Maybe simply some paperwork which is stacking up on your desk? Tsk. Russian’s finest? Don’t look like it!
There are a number of options here. It could be that these women have just picked these fruits and vegetables, and are hanging out chatting before they head home. Or they could be selling the wares on, like a kind of simplistic market stall. If that’s the case, maybe they should think about drawing themselves a sign, so we don’t just think it’s a handful of women out for lunch together, with a strange choice in lunchboxes.
Not to rag on the police in Russia, but these guys look like their being made to stand near something which smells intensely bad, or maybe they just have had a bad day! This is the kind of face that makes me think that no one wants to be at work today, and they all wish they had called in sick! Of course, it could just be an icy wind which caught them off guard, and a well timed camera flash, we will never know!
I can’t imagine what was in this guy’s head when he decided to get into the iciest water of all time, almost completely frozen over, and someone has cut out a small hot tub sized gap for him to take his dip. Except unlike a hot tub, this is an ice tub! Imagine climbing into a cup of water filled with ice cubes that’s sitting in the freezer, and you might come close to what this guy must be feeling. Yikes, someone get that guy to a doctor!
Russia is not known for having a high crime rate, and the police are usually not too rushed off their feet, perhaps they might get the occasional person who is drunk and disorderly, or a common thief from time to time. These two female police officers look mostly bored, standing around wondering what to do next. The one on our left looks like she’s forgotten her standard uniform for the day, and has opted for a miniskirt instead!
